Milestones

There are a few milestones in one's life that are worth documenting, birth, blessing, baptism, birthdays, Christmas, you get the idea. Ethan just experienced one of these noteworthy milestones, contact lenses.

He had been asking for months for contacts (he's had glasses since 4th grade) and I, being the stellar mother I am, kept putting him off with things like this, "Maybe." "We'll see." "When you can show me how responsible you are." "Maybe before you start Jr. High." That last one was a good one I thought.  That one felt comfortable to me. Yeah, the end of the summer. That'd be a good time. It wasn't until about 2 weeks before the end of the school year when Ethan mentioned in casual conversation that his teacher had said he needed to go get his eyes checked. I did a double take and said, "Why would Mr. Templeton tell you you need an eye exam?"  Ethan replied, "Because I can't see the board and I have to move to the front of the room." Well that would have been good to know.  I reminded Ethan that not being able to see is a good thing to mention to your mother.

Well that took the wind out of my procrastinator sails. I made the appointment and after over an hour of trying Ethan's dreams came true.

It brought back so many memories for me while I watched, encouraged and tried to coach him in the art of contact placement.  He would have totally given up in less than 15 mins. if it had been my idea to get contacts but since he wanted them so badly he perservered.  He's been wearing them now for about 4 weeks and is almost a pro. I'm just hoping they'll survive scout camp. Cross your fingers!
